Computer Sketch Pad Choices

Most people haven’t owned a computer sketch pad before which is why choosing one for the first time can be a bit scary. You are not really sure what to look for and which electronic pad would be perfect for you according to your needs and budget. To know more about sketch pads and the different choices that you have in them, let’s take a look at the features and types of computer sketch pads.  A computer sketch pad is like a mouse, trackball or any other pointing device and it allows you draw images and graphics just as you do with a pencil on paper.  Any computer drawing pad has two parts which are the screen on which you can draw and the pen or stylus. Most tablets come with a pen as the main input device while some pads also come with a cordless mouse.

One of the basic things that you need to see in an electronic pad is its size.  Don’t be fooled into thinking that bigger pads are better as this isn’t the case mostly.  You can choose between surface sizes of four inches by five inches or six inches by eight inches which are the two commonly used sizes.  If you’re an artist or a CAD user, you might want to get a bigger screen size but do bear in mind that the price of the pad increases along with the size.  The actual footprint of the pad is much larger than the actual input area. For example, the Wacom Intuos tablet has an input area of 6” by 8” while the actual footprint of the pad is 6” x 8”.

The interface is the mechanism through which the pad connects to a computer. You can choose between a USB or a serial interface. These days, you will find most tablets with a USB interface since most computers support USB.  However, if your computer is of an older model, you would have to buy a tablet with a serial interface but make sure that you have a serial port available in the pc that wont disturb another device. Another option available to you is the Bluetooth which connects the pad and the computer wirelessly. Right now, only Wacom is producing Bluetooth capable pads.

The pen which comes with the pad also gives you some choices to decide from. Pens are either powered by a battery of are tethered and free. The batteries of the pen will have to be changed after some time while the extra weight of the battery makes the pen heavy.  And the last thing is the pressure sensitivity. You can choose from different pressure sensitivities like 256, 512 or 1024. More the pressure sensitivity of the pad more would be its responsiveness.
